What does a network Engineer actually do?

I chose this topic because I am a network engineer major at Johnson & Wales University. I want to learn more about my future profession, and at the same time I want to provide others some information about network engineers, and what they do on the job.

Network Engineer Jargon

1. LAN-local area network- allows small group of computers to share resources.

2. WAN-Wide area Network- usually connected to many LANs for a large group of computers to share resources. the largest WAN is the internet.

3. WLAN- Wireless local area network- It is a LAN that uses wireless capabilities to share resources rather than traditional cables.

4. WEP- Wired Equivalent Privacy- is a protocol that adds security to (WLAN) wireless local area networks equivalent to wired networks.

5. Internet- is the global system of interconnected computer networks that uses the standards internet protocol suite TCP/IP.

6. IP- Internet Protocol-Is the principal communication protocol used for relaying datagrams across the internetwork.

7. TCP- Transmission Control Protocol- core protocol of the internet protocol suites TCP works with IP transmitting Internet packets while IP addresses and routes.

8. Information Technology (Packet)-is a formatted unit of data carried by a packet mode computer network.

9. Packet switching- Is a digital networking communication method that groups all transmitted data together regardless of type into small blocks called packets in an effort to save time and space when sending transmitted data to network nodes.

10. Node- Is a connection point, Either a redistribution point or a communication endpoint.
